Tears of joy: New Miss England Charlotte Holmes, a former contestant on Britain's Next Top Model, sheds tears of happiness after accepting her sash and putting on the red and white tiaraNervously fidgeting with hemlines and re-adjusting beehives, the sixty beauty-queen finalists of the Miss England 2012 competition waited impatiently.
Then finally former Britain's Next Top Model contestant Charlotte Holmes from Devon was announced as the winner.
The 23-year-old Miss Devon shed tears of joy as she accepted her crown and held up her trophy on stage at the Athena in Leicester.
Dressed in a sparkly blue gown with a thigh-high split she managed to dry her eyes before being joined on stage by runner-up Anastasia Smith, Miss North Yorkshire, and third place Tamzin Cummings, Sunderland People's Choice.

Inspiring: Charlotte said in the run up to the finals that the contest was 'a fantastic way to celebrate ambitious young women'In the run-up to the final Miss Holmes said on her entry page on the Miss England website that the competition was 'a fantastic way to celebrate inspirational, ambitious, young women' and that she will put every energy into making England proud of their contestant in Miss World.
Miss Holmes, who was a contestant on the sixth cycle of the popular reality show, may be advised to celebrate in moderation as her Miss England duties will start immediately when she is whisked away to Mauritius in the morning to promote a campaign for Fiesta.

Favourite to win: As a former Britain's Next Top model contestant 23-year-old Miss Holmes' name was on everybody's lips from day one of the finalsThe final catwalk included an eco-catwalk show where the finalists had to design their own ‘green outfit’.
The round was introduced five years ago as an 'antidote' to the scrapped bikini round.
Miss Holmes was not without competition – the list of finalists included serving police officer Alice Nicholas, 22, Chelsie Griffin, 21, a GB kickboxer, and 18-year-old Coral Beary, captain of a women's football team.
The new Miss England will take over from Alize Mounter, 23, from Kensington and is also entered in Miss World which will be held later this year.
