Car light: The man pictured the moment he stupidly flicked his lighter as he was filling up his vehicleAnyone who thought it was all right to play with a cigarette lighter while filling a car with fuel at a petrol pump should take a long hard look at this man's narrow escape.
The foolish motorist decided to flick his lighter while he waited at the fuel pump in the Melbourne suburb of Thomastown.
Suddenly the fumes ignited - followed by the petrol.
Idiot: He struggled to keep the flames under control, all the time being watched by the CCTV cameraFor a moment the man was hidden by a wall of flame - and it was all captured on the filling station's CCTV camera.
As the stunned motorist jumped backwards, the camera caught another, quick-thinking, driver, identified only as Mr Zaini, grabbing a bucket of water.
He then throws it over the fuel which was still gushing from the pump. At the same time a petrol attendant, who is out of the shot, closed down the pump.
Last night Mr Zaini was praised for his fast-thinking and courage.
Problem: But his efforts were stifled as the flames continued to grow
Running scared: Terrified, he leapt over the car bonnet in a bid to escape'He's had a fantastic presence of mind,' said Melbourne Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Robert Taylor.
'He's recognised the danger of the situation and his bravery has to be commended.'
As for the careless motorist who almost went up in flames for his foolish mistake, his identity has yet to be established.
Hero: Mr Zaini, who was filling up his car nearby, is seen running over to help put out the flames by throwing a bucket of water over the splashed petrolsource: dailymail
