True grit: Germany's Sascha Klein, left, and Melissa Wu of Australia, right, both have looks of extreme concentration

It requires the proper springboard, a pool of the right depth, and of course, years of training. But for many divers in the London 2012 Olympics, the precious seconds between springboard and water, it’s also about immense concentration.
That concentration, combined with somersaults, spins, twists, and turns while heading face first into the water can yield amusing facial expressions. With hands clasped around their legs, twisting furiously, the last thing on any athlete's mind is how they are photographed.

Don't look down: Left, Emilie Heymans of Canada and Zhang Yanquan from China keep their eyes closed during their respective dives

Below, MailOnline has collected some of the best and most bizarre facial expressions of Olympians competing for gold, with everything from grimaces to grins. Which one is wackiest? Tell us below in the comments section.

Training day: Even before the Olympics, these two divers were at the Olympic Stadium practicing their diving grimaces
